Please start slow if --
1) You haven't exercised for a while.
2) You are trying out a new exercise, for example: "Cardio-Circuit" program,
which is very challenging.
Your
workout should be a bit uncomfortable and should challenge you... A lot
of people don't know their heart rate because they're too busy reading
or talking. Pay attention to your body when you're working out. Focus! Check your heart rate! Listen to your body. Focus on the task at hand!
Strategy #1: Record your HR (heart rate) in your journal and write down how you are feeling, the duration of your exercise for that day, etc. This is one way to keep track of your progress.
Strategy #2: Try something different.
Remember, your muscles have memory and the same old exercise that you
have been doing no longer is a "challenge" to your body. Get some new ideas to challenge your body.
